MPEG-1

Good performance but poor resolution.

MPEG-2

RECOMMENDED. Best combination of performance and resolution but large file size.

MPEG-4

Small file size but high processing load can slow an NTB11x.

AVI

Best image quality but extremely high processing load. May overload an NTB11x.

QuickTime (.MOV)

Apple Mac format. Can have very high processing load and may overload an NTB11x.

VOB

Same as MPEG-2.

HDD

Extremely good quality but processing load too high for NTB11x. Only available on NTB3000 series.

WMV

Windows PC format, only works on a Windows PC.

Unlisted formats have not been tested.

The same video clip in the different formats will have different file sizes and will place different processing loads on the NTB when played. The NTB has a 1GHz processor (less than most PC's) so it is more important to use a format that is easier to decode than one that has smaller file sizes. MPEG-2 is, therefore, preferred over all other formats. It is usually best to transcode other formats to MPEG-2 before uploading them to the NTB.

Requirements

The NTB can only play video files after they have been uploaded into the "media" folder on the NTB.

Only one video can be shown at the same time on an NTB11x.

How to Make your own Videos

  1. Obtain a digital video camera.
  2. Shoot the video. Use of a tripod is recommended and keep panning and zooming to a minimum.
  3. Obtain a PC with a Firewire port and connect the camera to the PC with a Firewire cable.
  4. Obtain DV video editing software. Recommended products are "PowerDirector", "Pinnacle Studio" or "Windows Movie Maker" (part of Windows XP).
  5. Transfer the video from the camera to the PC using the "Capture" facility of the software.
  6. Start a new project and drag the captured video into the story board / timeline in the "Edit" facility.
  7. Cut unwanted scenes from the video, split scenes into clips and re-arrange clip order as required.
  8. Add more advanced features to the movie.
  9. Produce the final movie in the "Produce" or "Finalise" facility. Where possible, generate the movie as an MPEG-2 at 720x576 pixels and a bitrate between 3 and 8 Mbps.
  10. Locate the finished product - a file on your PC - and upload it onto the NTB.
